Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy, more specifically Groot, you may want to be sitting for this next bit of news. The adult version of the character is dead. Forever gone, says Guardians director James Gunn, never to be coming back.

This revelation, which Gunn used one of his legendary Q&A sessions he typically has with his Instagram fans, to share, may not be big to any that has seen Guardians of the Galaxy as Groot, the adult version, was killed during the climax of the first movie. Perhaps, though, it was the confirmation by Gunn that was more telling.

During the Q&A with fans, Gunn touched on many things, answered many questions concerning his films, life, and anything else fans were curious about. But one fan specifically mentioned Groot and how they missed the adult version saying, “I miss groots adult form, will we see him as an adult again?” Gunn didn’t dance around the question or his answer. “Sadly that original Groot is no longer with us,” Gunn shared via Comic Book. “So unless there is a prequel of some type, we won’t see him again.”

As fans know, there have been three versions of Groot so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The original was the adult Groot. After his death, Rocket Raccoon finds a twig from Groot and plants it. From there we get Baby Groot, a fan favorite. Baby Groot appears throughout most of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, displaying his childlike behaviors, much to the chagrin of the other Guardians. But his assistance is necessary at the end of the movie when Baby Groot is asked to plant the bomb inside Ego’s core. Baby Groot is the only one small enough to get inside. After all is said and done, fans are introduced to the teenage version of Groot.

Teenage Groot is present in Avengers: Infinity War and remains in that form throughout the movie. His attitude speaks directly to being a teenager as he is constantly rebellious towards authority, most notably when Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) tells him to put his video game away. Groot’s response toward Quill, a snide “I am Groot” causes an uproar from the remaining Guardians, perfectly showcasing the true nature of teenagers throughout time. But like many of the other Avengers, Teenage Groot succumbs to the Thanos snap. Avengers: Endgame would see the return of Teenage Groot as he is brought back for the final battle.

With Gunn claiming without a shadow of a doubt that Adult Groot is no longer, we can assume it will be Teenage Groot we’ll get when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters. When that will be is anyone’s guess at this point. The film has not even started production, though according to Gunn during his Q&A, principal photography will begin later this year. Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer, was one of the first to talk about Vol. 3’s schedule as well as speak about the changes that were made to the script following the untimely death of Chadwick Boseman. “I believe it’s okay to say that we will go into production late next year,” Bautista shared with Entertainment Weekly. “I saw a script early on when we were all on schedule and James Gunn was attached before everything went nutso. I believe because [Marvel’s] whole calendar has changed [due to the pandemic shutdown and Guardians‘ production delays], that storylines have changed, and they won’t intersect like originally planned. Obviously, we lost Chadwick [Boseman], so I don’t know where that leaves Black Panther. I haven’t seen a new script, is the short answer.”

With many questions still needing answers concerning Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the one thing we do know is that Gunn will not be bringing back Adult Groot. Then again, there is the Multiverse. Stay tuned.
