Danny was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 24, 1980 as Daniel Jay Gokey. He is the fifth of his parents’ six children. He has four sisters (Janell, Gina, Tracey and Angela) and a brother named Charles.

He attended heritage Christian schools in his hometown and was introduced to music early in life. He started singing with his family in the family church – Faith Builders International Ministries.

In 9th grade, Gokey auditioned for his school singing group – ABLAZE, he was not cast, but was allowed to play trumpet for a few years instead. He served as worship director for his church for many years and during this time he also worked for a local logistics company as a driver for a period of two years.

Rise to Glory

Danny Gokey became a national figure and household name after appearing on the eighth annual American Idol. He auditioned for the singing competition in Kansas City, Missouri alongside his friend Jamar Rogers. They both made it to Hollywood, but Rogers couldn’t make it to the semi-finals like his friend Danny.

On the season finale, Gokey did a duet with R&Bstar Lionel Richie. Although he was the only contestant never to make the final two or three of the season, he was eliminated in 3rd place and signed a recording contract with 19 Recordings and RCA Nashville. Danny not only became the first Idol man to sign to a major country label, but also the first third place finalist to sign to 19 Recordings.

In December 2009, he released his first single “My Best Days Are Ahead”, his debut album. My Best Days, arrived three months later and quickly reached #4 on the chart as well as having the best opening sales in eighteen years. It was also the highest charting debut album by any new country artist to be sold via digital download.

Danny Gokey was married to his high school sweetheart Sophia Martinez from 2004 to 2008. The two had been together since 1997. Sadly, Sophia passed away in July 2008, aged 27, following an operation. She suffered from congenital heart disease. This was his third operation. due to complications.

Sophia was a huge American Idol fan and had encouraged Gokey to audition for the singing competition, and four weeks after her death, Danny appeared before a team of judges in Kansas City, Missouri, auditioning for the show.
