R. Kelly has hired new legal representation for his appeal. As reported by The Chicago Tribune, Jennifer Bonjean, the attorney who was behind Bill Cosby's own (successful) appeal, has just signed on to fight against Kelly's racketeering conviction. Speaking with the outlet, Bonjean said she is "looking forward to getting familiar with the record" and slammed the racketeering charge.
"I am becoming increasingly concerned with how the government is abusing the RICO [Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act] statute in order to plead around the statute of limitations and essentially put people's entire lives on trial," she said. "It's becoming a formula for the government. You have a right to defend yourself against specific allegations."
Per The Tribune, Bonjean noted that in case the judge will deny a new trial, they plan to work on the appeal. As you may recall, Bonjean helped free Cosby in June, after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his sexual assault conviction, per CNBC.
